There is a popular quote that states, "genetics load the gun, environment pulls the trigger." In other words, research indicates that eating disorders are caused by a our multi-generational family genetics coupled with an inability to cope with certain environmental stressors or events.
These family genetics may include the presence of other psychiatric illness such as substance abuse, generalized anxiety disorder, depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder as well as substance abuse. Some examples of environmental stressors contributing to the manifestation of an eating disorder may include: academic difficulties, changing schools or jobs, going to college, moving, loss, trauma, marriage, relationship difficulties (with significant others, family or friends), pregnancy, physical or chronic illness.
I invite my clients to explore with me how their early life experiences and current difficulties have manifested and are maintaining their unhealthful eating and/or exercise patterns or eating disorder. It is through the exploration of underlying issues that healing from an eating disorder can truly begin. I will meet you where you are at, as I understand that your eating disorder has also served an important role and purpose in your life.
I work with my clients to identify the factors that contributed to the formation of an eating disorder and learn new ways to identify and express emotions and cope with difficult situations. We will discover what the triggers to your eating disordered behaviors are and anticipate triggers for relapse. Through a clear understanding of your eating disorder and how it has effected your life, you will become empowered to make decisions regarding your eating disorders place in your future.
