Going to therapy is a big decision! It is important that you find a therapist who you feel comfortable with and who you feel is qualified to address your needs. In addition to providing specialized treatment for eating disorders, I also as work with individuals on a range of life and relationship issues.
Common concerns that bring individuals into therapy:
My approach to individual therapy consists of a mix of cognitive behavioral therapy, positive psychology and humanistic-existential therapy.
Adolescents and Pre-teens
I have worked with adolescents and pre-teens in individual, group and family therapy. I have a particular soft-spot for adolescents and pre-teens. I empathize with the immense challenges of this age group, Not only is the identification and expression of feelings confusing and difficult at this age, but not knowing how to cope with these feelings when they arise can create behaviors that peers, teachers or parents might view as concerning or scary. Individual therapy can be very useful to help adolescents and preteens learn to navigate the immeasurable amounts of stressors that are present in their lives.
Common concerns for adolescents and pre-teens in therapy:
My approach to therapy with pre-teens and adolescents is an eclectic mix of expressive arts therapies and cognitive behavioral therapy. I also like to use some components of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy when applicable.
It is important to note that some situations require the involvement of parents and at times, the entire family in therapy.
This is done either through weekly "check-ins" at the end of your child/teen's individual session or scheduling a separate family session in order to best meet the needs of the client and their family system.
*** Please note: although I may involve parents or the entire family, I will ensure to protect the privacy of the child/teen and confidentiality of information shared in individual sessions. However, there are some situations in which confidentiality may be breached for safety concerns - but this will be done with the utmost sensitivity.
